\nReading can sometimes become very difficult in IELTS because of the time limit. So here are some key reading tipsto get your IELTS questions right. Read on!<\/p>\n

i.\u00a0Reading & analysing<\/strong>: The first tip is to spend quality time in reading and analysing the questions. It is not a good technique to immediately begin to answer the questions, without first carefully reading them through! Reading the words and understanding their meaning before trying to find the answer is a much better technique instead.<\/p>\n

IELTS questions for the \u201cTrue\/False\/Not given\u201d and the \u201cYes\/No\/Not given\u201d categories use the same techniques. So the same tips & tricks can be used to answer both types of questions correctly!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

ii.\u00a0Matching the meaning, not the keywords<\/strong>: Match the meaning behind the words in the question statement, do not try to match the keywords<\/em>. Don\u2019t waste your time scanning the question statement for keywords. Your answer is more likely to be correct if you understand the passage or the statement presented to you.<\/p>\n

iii.\u00a0Paraphrasing<\/strong>: Much of your IELTS score depends on the power of your vocabulary. Your ability to paraphrase a passage becomes better when you have a larger stock of words to help you express yourself. Your knowledge of the language will also help you understand a statement better, and identify where the right answer lies.<\/p>\n

The meaning of \u201cfalse\u201d & \u201cno\u201d in an IELTS question is that the \u201cinformation is contradictory or opposite\u201d. Don\u2019t make the mistake of thinking that these two words mean the \u201cinformation does not match\u201d.<\/strong><\/em>Spottingtrick questions<\/strong>: Look out for some of these common patterns in IELTS questions that are used to confuse you. It is a smart way to ascertain your grip over the English language. A typical trap is the use of comparisons. The tip here is to find a matching comparison in the passage when there is a question with comparisons like \u2018more\u2019 or \u2018less than\u2019. Also, look out for words like \u2018some\u2019, \u2018all\u2019 and \u2018majority\u2019 in the question, and then try to match them with statements from the passage. A match will give you the right answer<\/p>\n

v. Answers appear in order<\/strong>:This is a very important tip<\/em>. Each question follows the order of the information in the passage. Rest assured that the answer to the fourth question will not lie in the beginning of the passage! This essentially means that you should always start by answering the first question, and working your way down the passage.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t answer a \u201cTrue\/False\/Not given\u201d question with a \u201cYes\u201d or \u201cNo\u201d in your answer sheet. You will be marked wrong. Write \u201cTrue\u201d or \u201cFalse\u201d.The same goes for the \u201cYes\/No\/Not given\u201d type of questions. Don\u2019t answer those with a \u201cTrue\u201d or \u201cFalse\u201d on your answer sheet!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

vi. Be aware of the next question<\/strong>:The above tip also means that you need to keep your eye on the next question coming up for the passage.Don\u2019t waste your time reading the whole passage for the answer to a particular question. If you know where the answers to the first and the next questions are, the answer to this particular question has to lie in between<\/em> these two answers!You don\u2019t have tolook too far. Remember that this tip will save you a lot of time!<\/p>\n

vii. A letter instead of a word<\/strong>: Students are often confused about whether they can write a letter instead of a word. For example, can you write \u201cT\u201d instead of \u201cTrue\u201d or \u201cY\u201d instead of \u201cYes\u201d? The good news is that yes, you can. If the correct answer is \u201cTrue\u201d, and you write \u201cT\u201d, IELTS will mark you right for that. A word of caution, however, is not to take the risk if your writing is not clear. It might be easier to write the whole word instead of just the letter in that case!<\/p>\n
